Knowledge of genes

The main reason why genomics is important, is so we know more about genes and DNA. It is generally known that everyone has DNA and that you give your DNA to your children. How this works is not yet entirely clear however. Simple aspects of human life can be defined already, like hair colour. Science has pointed out for example that if one of you parents has a dominant gene for brown hair and one of your parent has a recessive gene for blond hair, you will have brown hair. Not all aspects of your body and mind are as simple as hair colour unfortunately. Sometimes two parents are really outgoing, but one of their children is really shy while their other child is also outgoing. Despite having the same environment and upbringing, they can be entirely different. It is likely that this is partly because of their DNA. Genetic diseases

Another reason why science tests about DNA are important, is to know more about genetic diseases. If you have someone in your family with Huntington for example, it is important to know whether you have the gene for Huntington as well. If you know early whether you have the disease, it could change your decision to have children or buy a house for example. To be able to warn possible victims of genetic diseases in time, a lot of research needs to be done about DNA.
